Coaching vs. /Therapy
You might be wondering what the difference is between coaching and therapy and which one would be right for you. In a nutshell, they are both a form of counseling. However, therapy tends to help clients by examining and healing old wounds, focusing on past issues that may be creating present circumstances. Also, therapy tends to deal with more serious issues, such as depression, mental illness and addictions, infidelity, grief work, eating disorders, etc.
The relationship between the client and his/her therapist is extremely important for the healing process as often the therapist becomes a screen for the client to work out his/her projections and unmet needs from childhood.
The life coach, on the other hand, is a mentor or guide who plays an active role in helping the client stay on track with a target goal, i.e., get married, attract a relationship, find a new job, loose weight, figure out one's life purpose, increase client base, get more dates, etc. Coaches support their client's with manifesting a vision for the future by holding client's accountable to their commitments and taking action steps co-created by the coach and the client. Coaches work towards empowering clients to get out of their own way in order to achieve their goal. Coaching focuses more on helping clients take concrete actions to change one's life as well as exploring and changing unhealthy thoughts and behaviors that have gotten you to where you are right now. Life coaching can also be deep and transformational, but is better suited for people who are already highly functional and want more.
When issues are more serious it's important to turn to a licensed professional. Registered Counselors, Licensed psychotherapists, social workers, marriage and family counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists are highly trained to deal with mental illness, suicide, addictions, abuse, and other diagnosis illnesses.
